ENVIRONMENT

With Covid-19 dominating the press headlines, It can be easy to briefly forget about the alarming affects of climate change that lurks around the corner.

Forward will develop and implement both short term and long term stages within our strategy to reduce our community's carbon footprint. Not only are a focused upon climate action, Forward will be focusing on protecting the local environment and wildlife within ANU. If Elected, Forward will:

1) Create a Climate Change Action, Adaption and Sustainability plan.

2) Pressure the ANU and small businesses within ANU to phase out single-use plastics and polystyrene products.

3) Switch to 100% recycled paper and synthetic ink cartridges for all printed materials. Forward will set the example for ANU to follow post-covid19 when normal examination conditions are returned. These actions will help us move away from our reliance on oil.

4) Lobby the ANU to retrofit light fittings with 'downward' guards to reduce the impact of light pollution on our wildlife, including possums and birds.

5) Create an LGBTQIA+ study garden to celebrate Queer students and alumni. This garden will include several trees to be planted and a small stone mural for Queer students past and present.

6) Create a Carbon Offsetting programme by trialing a carbon-negative bio sink. This trial will be based upon evidence supported by the Fenner School of Environment and Society.

7) lobby the ANU for the placement of "Smart bins" in an effort to reduce waste and carbon footprint.
