We hope you found your bicycle Darryl.

Forward will pressure ANU to crackdown on Bike Thefts on-campus

IMG_6459[3926].JPG

Whether you travel to and from campus by car, bike, bus, light rail, coach or plane, Transport plays an active role in our daily lives both within and outside of ANU. Planning for transport needs and accessibility needs to evolve on a regular basis to meet community demand. Without a comprehensive plan around transport, many student can find themselves without access to sufficient space to lock their bikes in bike racks. or perhaps a lack of available parking spaces. If Elected, Forward will:

1) Lobby the ANU to commit to building new bike cages and sufficient lighting to existing bike racks.

2) Advocate for the installation of e-bike charging stations campus-wide.

3) Lobby Transport Canberra for a northbound bus stop at Rimmer Street

4) Adopt a pedestrian/cyclist traffic efficiency strategy for the entire ANU campus. We aim to advocate this strategy as part of ANU's master plan

5) Advocate for NSW & VIC eligibility for tertiary concessions for both opal and Myki fares. This will also include eligibility for both V/line and NSW Trainlink.

6) Build a low-profile Cycle lane down University Avenue to increase traffic efficiency and protect pedestrian safety

7) Pressure the ANU to fast-track plains to convert the Daley Road, Sullivan Creek road loop into a shared zone between cyclists and motorists.

Our Goals:

1) Both NSW and VIC public transport concession recognition by Semester 2, 2021.

2) Open our low-profile cycle lane by Semester 1, 2021.

3) Reduce bike thefts on-campus by a minimum of 50%.

4) connect 100 ebike charging stations by 2022.

Unfortunately, due to the financial shortfalls of ANU and the limited production from Yutong due to COVID-19, we will be shelving our plans for an electric shuttle bus service for the campus and surrounding suburbs.

For the small price of a regular cup of coffee every fortnight for every undergratuate student, we could lease 1 Yutong E12 electric bus with storage, driver salary and electricity to transport both on-campus students to and from the city while offering services for nearby off-campus students for free.

The main reasoning for this is to reduce our carbon footprint left by vehicle emissions, provide free transport for students to make their money go further in their personal budgets while reducing cars on-campus, essentially freeing up car parks.

Following the Stanford university framework, we had three hypothetical models of how we would fund the bus, including the option to establish a joint venture between UC and the new UNSW Reid campus to create a 'spine' to connect the three campuses and surrounding suburbs with free transport of all students.

As another source for funding, the bus would've charged a small fee to take students directly to and from campus to the airport, music festivals (Grooven the moo, Spilt Milk, googfest etc) and also special events like the Royal Canberra show and Floriade nightfest.

Obviously we can't do this now, but we are keen to make this a reality by 2026. Its costed as financially-viable to lease and although ANUSA doesn't have direct authority over a bus, the ANU has allowed the option of a 'shuttle bus' in their Campus Masterplan. The ANU want's it, we know how to get it.
